PERSONAL:
I began life in Southern Oregon. My young biological mother found her way to the Salvation Army’s White Shield Center in Northwest Portland, where I stayed for a short time before being moved to Waverly Children’s Home in Southeast Portland. After some time there, I was adopted and raised in Pendleton, Oregon.
I later moved to Corvallis, attended Oregon State University, and remained there until I met my future wife. I followed her to San Francisco, where I launched my career and built the foundation for the life ahead. I proposed at the top of Twin Peaks, and we were married in Northwest Portland in an outdoor ceremony before returning home to raise our three children.
Years later, I served on the board of Trillium Family Services — the organization that included Waverly Children’s Home. The bank also placed me on the board of The Salvation Army. During a new board member orientation, without any prior knowledge of my own origins, I discovered that the “maternity home” we visited was the very place where I had been born. Standing in that building in 2021, now as a board member, I connected the dots between my original birth certificate;s address and the White Shield address — altered over time, therefore hidden when I went to search - - but then - found. The director of our tour that day was named Grace of all names. He has a sense of humor and I have shared this story in front of thousands many times.
Today, I continue to serve on that board and have since returned to Oregon. I thank God for every gift, struggle, challenge, and moment of endurance He has provided. I am grateful He has not revealed what lies around the next bend or how the story ends.
It is an adventure.
God is great.
